Bien installé dans la scène trance depuis quelques années maintenant, MaRLo, le natif hollandais mais désormais vivant en Australie, a réussi à consolider une solide réputation qui lui permet d’être désormais régulièrement présent sur les plus grosses Mainstage trance de la planète et d’organiser ses propres solo shows « ALTITUDE». Nous nous sommes entretenus avec ce boulimique de travail et désormais père de famille, après son set lors du dernier ASOT !

Merci MaRLo de nous rejoindre. Qu’est—ce que ça représente pour toi de jouer à ASOT ?
Jouer à ASOT, de plus sur la mainstage, c’est pour moi le sommet ! Tellement de gens viennent, regardent le streaming en ligne. Et même après toutes ces années, les gens viennent vers moi pour me dire « Oh, j’ai adoré ton set à ASOT 600 à Beirut ! » C’était il y a 4 ans, ça montre à quel point c’est un évènement intemporel.
On te suit depuis longtemps, on peut dire que tu n’as pas explosé d’un coup comme certains mais que c’était plutôt un processus continu ! On se souvient bien de ton remix de Ohmna – Key of Life en 2009. Comment as-tu débuté et évolué dans ce milieu ?
Oui c’est vrai, ça a été un long parcours. Je suis d’abord tombé amoureux de la musique électronique avec Aphex Twin, Prodigy. C’était à un moment où je commençais aussi à sortir en club, à écouter des morceaux plus uplifting comme Armin Van Buuren, Tiësto, Ferry Corsten. Et après j’ai été écouté des choses plus dark, de la hard-trance, de la tech-trance. J’ai toujours aimé différents types de musique et j’essaie de les incorporer dans mon son. Donc pour une sortie ça sera plus lent, plus accessible, celle d’après plus dur et plus puissante.
Beaucoup de fans et de gens veulent te coller une étiquette. Donc quand tu fais deux sorties très proches ils vont penser que c’est ton son. Et donc après c’est un choc quand tu sors un morceau vocal par exemple. Mon son a toujours été un peu de tout comme tu mentionnes Key Of Life. Ça a commencé différemment de ce que j’ai fait dans ma vie. C’est ce qui m’intéresse moi, quand je suis en studio.
Ta track « Magical » est un bon exemple et une de nos préférés. Comment as-tu eu l’idée de combiner cet instrument du passé dans une production trance actuelle ?
On l’a fait avec Piotr. On a une organisation, APRA, qui est comme BUMA en Holland (la SACEM en France). C’est une agence qui a toutes les collections de musiques. Ils sont venus me voir en me proposant de collaborer avec quelqu’un du milieu de la musique traditionnelle. Il avait commencé sa propre carrière dans ce qu’il fait et je me suis dit que ça serait passionnant. Donc on a travaillé avec sa vielle à roue (Hurdy-Gurdy). Je ne crois pas que quelqu’un ai déjà fait la même chose dans la musique électronique. D’abord j’étais comme « Qu’est-ce que c’est que cet instrument ? ». Mais au final c’est super ! C’est vraiment ancien, ça a un son très primitif. Je me disais que ça serait passionnant de ramener un son comme ça dans une production vraiment moderne. Il a joué live lors de mon show « ALTITUDE ». C’était super ! On prépare un « follow-up ». Il a beaucoup d’instruments de world music. Il travaille en plus sur une autre échelle et d’autres temps. J’apprends beaucoup en travaillant avec lui car c’est très différent de notre beat 4/4.
Tu es natif de Hollande mais tu es parti en Australie. Tu as même été élu #1 là-bas C’était un choix dans ta carrière de partir ?
Non, en fait ma mère a épousé un australien donc j’ai pas eu trop le choix. Mais aujourd’hui j’ai le choix et j’adore vivre en Australie.
En parlant d’Australie, la scène est très vivante là-bas. Comment l’expliques-tu ?
Je n’arrive pas à l’expliquer mais c’est fantastique. Beaucoup de promoteurs, de lieux supportent maintenant la trance, c’est super !
Et tu supportes beaucoup les jeunes talents comme Exis, Pinkque, … C’est important pour toi de jouer ce rôle ?
Absolument, c’est très important. C’est pourquoi je vais démarrer mon propre label. Ce n’est pas vraiment pour moi mais il y a beaucoup d’artistes prometteurs dont je joue la musique tout le temps. Mais certains d’entre eux ne reçoivent pas le soutien, le conseil et les sorties dont ils méritent et ont besoin pour construire leur carrière.
Pour moi, le mieux, l’idée même du succès c’est de faire ce que vous aimez. Si je peux aider quelqu’un à accomplir ses rêves et de faire ce il qu’aime, c’est pour moi très motivant. J’ai été très chanceux dans ma carrière, j’ai reçu beaucoup de soutien. Le principal c’est d’être capable de donner en retour.
On ne peut pas faire d’interview de MaRLo sans parler de ta femme, Jano, comment va-t-elle ? Où en est le bébé ? (Jano a accouché d’un petit garçon, River, début mars).
Bien sûr ! Je rentre demain, le bébé est prévu pour début mars. Donc c’est d’une minute à l’autre ! On est très pressé !
Comment envisages-tu de manager ta carrière et ta famille ?
Désormais je vais me concentrer sur mes shows Altitude. Je ferais quelques tournées internationales mais plus sélectives et plus longues genre 3 semaines aux US et ensuite je rentre ! L’année dernière j’allais partout tout le temps. Ce n’est pas envisageable !

Si MaRLo collaborait avec son artiste préféré, ça serait : Armin Van Buuren. Et on a une collab qui va sortir bientôt, c’est fantastique. Armin est un artiste incroyable et un bon ami. Mais ça peut aussi être des artistes inconnus, comme Emma Chatt avec qui j’ai fait un morceau. J’ai travaillé avec Chloé aussi beaucoup. Elles n’étaient pas connues mais quand la musique est bonne, je suis toujours pour travailler dessus !
Si MaRLo se retrouvait seul sur une ile déserte, il écouterait : Al Green – Let’s stay together ou Keane – Somewhere Only We Know. Mais probablement Keane, ça me rappelle Janette
Si MaRLo n’était pas dans l’industrie musicale, il travaillerait dans : L’animation numérique. C’est comme ça que j’ai commencé la musique en fait. Je faisais des animations et donc je faisais les effets sonores, la musique de fond pour mes animations. J’aimerais faire ça pour Pixar par exemple mais je suis trop occupé désormais.
Si MaRLo était une recette de cuisine, il serait : une soupe « Pho », c’est épicé mais doux à la fois

Thank you MaRLo for joining us, first question what does ASOT represents for you?!
Playing at ASOT especially on the mainstage is the pinnacle event for me to play. So many people are coming, watching the livestream online. After so many years, some people still come to me and say “Oh I Love your set at ASOT 600 in BEIRUT”, 4 years ago! It shows that it is timeless.
We are following you now for a long time. You didn’t really explode, it was more a continued process ! We remember your remix of Ohmna – Key of Life in 2009. How did you start your journey into music production and how did you evolve ?
Yes it’s true, it has been quite a long journey. First I fell in love with Electronic music with Aphex Twin, Prodigy. And it was also the moment I started going out clubbing, listening more uplifting stuff like Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten. And then I went harder into hard-trance, tech-trance. I’ve always liked a lot of different types of music from the start and I try to incorporate into my sound. So for one release it will be slower and more accessible, and the one after I’ll do something really hard, pumping.
A lot of fans and people want to label you as something. So when you do really hardback released, they think that it’s his sound. And then it’s a chock if you do a vocal track after that for example. My sound has always been a bit of everything like you mentioned Key of Life. It started different from the other stuff I’ve done in my life. That’s what is interesting for me when I’m in the studio!
Your track « Magical » is a good example and was one of our personal favorite, how did you get this idea to combine that instrument from the past in a trance production.
That was with a guy called Piotr. We have something APRA in Australia which is like BUMA in Holland. It’s the collection agency from where you get the music on the radio. They approached me and said « would you like to collaborate with someone from the traditional music style. And he started his own career in what he does and I thought it was very exciting. So we worked together with his hurdy-gurdy. I don’t think someone ever worked with it before in electronic music. First I was even like « What is that instrument?! ». But it’s amazing, it’s very ancient instrument! It’s very primitive sounding and I thought it was exciting to bring such an old sounding into something really modern. And he performed live at “ALTITUDE” show. It was amazing. There is a follow up coming up! He’s got a lot of different world music instrument. And he works in really different scale and time signature. I learn a lot working with him because it’s very different than our 4/4 standards.
You’re native from Holland but moved to Australia. You just received the award of #1 in Australia. Was it a choice in your career to move there?
No, my mother married an Australian man so I didn’t have much choice! Now I do have the choice and I just love living in Australia.
Talking about Australia, are you able to explain the « BOOM » of the trance scene there?
I don’t know how to explain but it’s fantastic. Lot of promoters, venues are supporting the trance sound. It’s great!
And you are now playing at big events like Hisense Arena, …
Well my proudest moment in my career has been started my own « Altitude » concert show. We sold 15 000 tickets in Australia among 4 cities. We sold every venue out and now I want to bring that concept worldwide. 4 hours set, guest vocalists, and I also want to start an Altitude label.
You are also supporting lots of young talent like Exis, Pinkque… Is it important for you to play this role?
Absolutely it’s really important! That’s also why I will start my own label. It’s not so much for me but there are so many exciting artists that I play music all the time. But some of them are not receiving the support, the guidance and the releases that some of them need and deserve to build a career in music.
I mean the best thing, for me, the idea of success is to do what you love. If I can help someone else achieve their dreams and do what they love ; That for me is really fulfilling. I have been really lucky in my career, and I had a lot of support. The main thing is to be able to give back as well.
We cannot do an interview of MaRLo before talking about your wife, Jano, how is she doing? How’s the baby going?
Of course! I’m flying back tomorrow; the baby is planned for the second of March! It’s gonna come any moment now. We cannot wait!
How do you plan to manage your career and your family schedule ?
Now it will be focusing on my Altitude show. I will still do some international tours, but most selective and more long like 3 weeks in the US and then home. Last year, I was all over the place the all year, it’s not thinkable now.

If MaRLo was collaborating with his favorite artist, it would be: « Well I have my collaboration with Armin Van Buuren really soon, to be honest it’s fantastic. Armin is an amazing artist and good friend. But it’s also sometimes discovering the unknown people, like I did a song with a girl called Emma Chatt, from Perth. I worked with Chloe a lot. When I start working with them they were not really known but If if it’s a good song I’m excited to work on it. «
If MaRLo was alone on an Island, he would listen to : « Al Green – let’s stay together or Keane – Somewhere Only We Know. But probably Keane! It reminds me on Janette! »
If MaRLo was not in the music Industry, he would work in: « Computer animation. Actually I started music through computer animation. I was doing computer animation and in order to do the sound effect and background music for my animations, I started to learn how to make music. I’d love to do that for Pixar for example but I’m too busy.
If MaRLo was a cooking recipe, he would be: probably a Vietnamese soup « Pho ». It’s spicy but smooth.
