Cette année encore, nous sommes retournés à A Utrecht à l’occasion de l’évènement annuel trance « A State Of Trance ». On vous a déjà parlé de « Tout ce qu’il y a à savoir sur ASOT » ainsi qu’un article récap de la soirée mais on en a également profité pour interviewer quelques artistes. Le premier de la liste, c’est Rodg, qu’on avait déjà eu l’occasion de rencontrer l’année dernière juste après son set. Cette année nous étions particulièrement excités de le retrouver après son warm up sur la mainstage. Un set un peu spécial où le jeune hollandais était accompagné de Ruben de Ronde ; un set spécial également car les deux hollandais y jouaient et présentaient un album en entier intitulé « TogetheRR ».

Salut Rodg, merci d’être avec nous encore cette année. Première question un peu basique mais alors comment c’était ? Si tu te souviens bien l’année dernière on t’avait demandé sur quelle Mainstage tu voudrais jouer et tu nous avais dit celle d’ASOT.
Carrément c’était super !! Sérieusement, ma première fois sur la mainstage ! Un rêve qui devient réalité pour moi ! Ça a été une année totalement intense avec la sortie de mon premier album « High On Life », mais encore plus la deuxième partie de l’année lorsqu’on a été booké pour faire un B2B à ASOT. On s’est dit qu’il fallait y faire quelque chose de spécial, et seulement jouer nos propres productions. Seulement des collaborations ! Mais on n’avait pas trop de temps, c’était en septembre alors on s’est dit « Ça va être du boulot, mais on va le faire ! ». On a fini, je crois, le dernier morceau fin janvier, c’est une collab avec Orjan Nilsen. Mais le dernier contrat on l’a signé hier !
C’est une performance vraiment originale, je me souviens pas que quelqu’un ai déjà fait ça à l’ASOT.
Je ne suis pas sûr non plus !! Tu sais c’est marrant la première fois que j’ai joué à ASOT c’était y’a deux ans.. J’avais joué que mes productions et c’était vraiment un objectif personnel pour moi. L’année d’après encore que des productions mais différentes de celle de l’année d’avant. Donc cette année on peut dire que j’ai refait la même chose avec seulement des collabs avec Ruben.
Justement peux-tu nous en dire plus sur le processus derrière ce set ? Comment travaillez vous ensemble ? Est-ce que vous aviez déjà travaillé ensemble ?
Ouais on avait déjà fait quelques tracks. On est de bons amis, on travaille tous les deux sur Ableton, on utilise quasiment les mêmes plugins, c’est parfait ! On n’a pas forcément besoin d’être tous les deux tout le temps au studio ensemble. On partage un dossier Dropbox. Je me reconnais dans sa façon de travailler, de programmer. Quand j’ouvre un de ses projets, je me dis « Oh j’aurais pu faire ça aussi ! »
A propos du « workflow », c’était différent pour tous les morceaux quand j’y repense. Je commençais avec quelques idées et je les envoyais à Ruben, et il se disait « Oh ok, je vois bien un truc avec ça ! ». Quelques morceaux, je les travaillais jusqu’à un état presque fini et inversement avec Ruben. C’était vraiment fun et passionnant de travailler avec lui. Il m’emmenait au-delà de ma zone de confort, de mes limites. J’ai fait des morceaux dont je ne pensais jamais faire.
Comme le dernier morceau du set, celui orienté un peu psy ? Qui a eu cette idée ?
Exactement ! Si tu m’avais dit l’année dernière que je ferais un morceau psy l’année d’après. Je t’aurais dit « Ouais, c’est ça ! ». C’était une idée de Ruben, du genre « Le son psy trance est cool, c’est entrainant, ça tue sur le dancefloor ! On devrait faire quelque chose dans le style ». Donc on a fait quelque chose mais on l’a mis à 128 BPM avec des influences progressives.
Un autre morceau qui est unique, c’est le morceau « Whoop » !
Oh le morceau « Whoop ». C’est marrant, j’avais fait l’arrangement de la ligne de basse pour le morceau. Ruben l’a pris et est venu rajouter le son du whoop whoop. J’ai fait « Quoi ?! C’est entrainant, c’est unique ! » D’ailleurs tout le monde identifie ce morceau grâce à ce son. Il y a comme un suspense dans le morceau, ça me rappelle un peu les morceaux de Mord Fustang.
Donc tu expérimentes de nouvelles choses, de nouveaux horizons ? L’année dernière tu nous disais que tu aimais ta position du « warm-up guy ».
Oui c’est vrai ! Mais cette année, on était plus dans l’humeur de faire quelque chose pour le dancefloor, avec plus d’énergie et des basslines plus entrainantes.
Vous avez prévu, après ce set, de tourner ensemble ? Ou c’était exclusif pour ASOT ?
D’abord c’était vraiment exclusif pour ASOT, mais c’est sûr qu’on va refaire des dates ensemble cette année !
Vous avez pensé à un alias spécial du coup ?
Non, ça sera plus comme Ruben & Rodg. On veut aussi faire des dates solos, je vais aussi continuer mes projets solos.
Peux-tu nous dire comment tu perçois tes deux albums « High On Life » et le nouveau « TogetheRR » ?
Si je compare les deux albums, avec mon « High On Life », j’ai pu faire plus de choses expérimentales que je ne pourrais pas jouer dans un set. Avec ce nouvel album, on a joué absolument de tout. C’est fait pour le club, pour entrainer un dancefloor. Avec « High On Life », je voulais construire une histoire pour ceux qui allaient écouter. Il y a donc une vraie différence dans la manière de composer. Par exemple, Il y a un morceau chill-out dans mon album perso que je ne jouerais jamais dans mes sets. Dans un album, tu peux faire ce genre de morceau. Les réactions étaient très bonnes, le morceau phare « High On Life » a été joué à Miami par Armin. « Wired » a aussi bien marché, il était inclus dans le CD « A State of Trance 2016 », que demander de plus pour un premier album ?
Comment avez-vous trouvé le temps pour travailler sur l’album, vous êtes tous les deux très occupés à Armada ou sur ASOT. Est-ce que Armada vous a laissé un peu de temps libre ?
Ahah non pas du tout ! Les nuits et les weekends. La période de Noël était plus propice car les bureaux sont fermés la semaine entre Noël et le jour de l’an. C’était une semaine « full » pour la musique et je dois définitivement beaucoup à ma copine. Elle me soutenait beaucoup, elle me soutient beaucoup d’une manière générale. Cette année elle se balade même en tant que photographe ici ! Je suis très fier d’elle. C’est super de travailler ensemble dans le même monde mais en faisant des choses différentes.
Alors la prochaine étape, c’est quoi ? Tes propres soirées ?
Non ce n’est pas au programme ! Je suis impliqué dans le label de Ruben Statement ! On a fait la première « Statement Night » à Venlo il y a pas longtemps. L’endroit était top ! C’était vraiment bien ! Peut-être que l’on pourrait faire une Statement Night à Paris bientôt non ? J’adorerais jouer en France !

Hi Rodg and thank you for being with us again this year. First basic question how was it? You remember last year I asked you which mainstage do you dream to play on and you told me the ASOT one!
Yeah it was amazing man! Seriously! First time on the mainstage! Dream comes true!
It has been a really busy year with the release of my first album “High On Life”. But especially the last half year when we were booked to do a B2B set on ASOT. We told to each other let’s do something special, only a Ruben & Rodg production. Only collaboration! But we don’t have that much of time, it was back in September. So we were like « Ok, it’s gonna be a hard work but let’s do it! ». The last record I think we finished was end of January. It was the record with Orjan Nilsen. But the last contract was signed yesterday!
Yeah and it’s totally original performance, I don’t remember anyone ever did that!
I’m not sure as well! It’s actually funny that the first time I played ASOT was actually 2 years ago I played only my own production. That was a personal goal for me to achieve. Last year I did the same thing with also only new stuff! This year I kinda did it again, with only collab with Ruben
Can you tell us the process behind this set? How were you working together? Were you working with him in the past?
Yeah we did a couple of records. We are good friends, we both work with Ableton, we use kinda the same plugins. That’s perfect! We don’t have necessary to be in the studio all the time together. We have a shared Dropbox. I recognize myself in his project, his way of programming. When I open them I’m like « Oh ok! I could have done this »
But the workflow, … it was kinda different for every record, if I think about it. I started out with some ideas and then I dropped them to Ruben, and he was like « Oh yeah, I see something with this » and then I gave him. Some of the records I could worked on almost finished stage and some records he almost finished on an almost finished stage. So what was actually really exciting and fun, it was working with him. He put me out of my comfort zone. He drove me to the limit. I made records I thought I would never ever make.
Like the last track you played, the more psy-ich influenced one? Who had this idea?
Right! Right! If you asked me last year, you gonna do a psy trance records next year, I would have been like « Yeah Whatever! ».
It was Ruben’s idea. He was like « The psy trance sound is cool, is driving, is a dancefloor smashing. We need to do something with it ». Let’s try something with that but turn it into 128 BPM with progressive influences.
Another great and unique production is the « WHOOP » track!
Oh the Whoop Whoop track! It’s funny; I made the arrangement of the bassline for the record. Ruben took it from there and came up with the Whoop Whoop sound. I was like « What?! This is driving, this is unique and now everyone is like oh the « whoop » records! It has like of a cliffhanger and it reminds me a bit of Mord Fustang.
So you are experiencing new stuff, new horizons?! Last year you were telling us that you liked your position as « the warm up guy ».
Yeah it’s true, but this time we were more in the mood of doing something for the dancefloor, with more energy. More driving bassline
And it worked really well!
Thank you, I’m super glad that you say that because it was the most insecure thing because you’re asking yourself « Is it gonna work?! ».
You know that you will play the mainstage, so all the records you make, you have in mind « Ok, we need to play this on the mainstage. » but still we like to do kind of a dynamic set not only full energy but also build a little bit of a story and a build up for the rest of the night. We are the first Djs there; we have to start with something, set a place, set an atmosphere.
So now after this set with Ruben, are you planning to tour together? Or was it exclusive for ASOT?
First of all it was really exclusive for ASOT, though we gonna do more shows together. We gonna go on stage for sure together this year again.
Did you think about a special alias for your shows together?
Oh no! It will be more like Ruben & Rodg. We want to do separate shows as well. I will also continue my solo project.
Can you tell us about the difference between the two album « High on Life » and the new « TogetheRR ».
If I compare the two albums, with the Rodg album I can do more experimental stuff that I will not play in my set. But with this album we played everything! It’s made for club. It’s dancefloor driven. With « High On life », I wanted to build a story for the listeners. There is a big difference in the workflow.
On « High On Life », there is a chill-out record for example I would never play on my shows. In an album you can do it. Reactions were amazing, It’s amazing that the title record « High On Life », did really well. It was played in Armin’s set in Miami. « Wired » was featured on « A State Of Trance 2016 CD », what more do you want for your first album.
How did you find time to work on this new album? You’re both really bus working at Armada or for ASOT. Did Armada give you some free time to work on the album ?
No ! ahah ! Nights and weekends! Christmas season was great also because the office is closed between Christmas and New Year eve! It was a full week of music and I definitely own my girlfriend a lot! She was really supportive, she is really supportive! This year she’s walking around as a photographer herself. I’m really proud of her! It’s great working together on the same field but doing different things.
So what is the next step? To have your own event?!
No it’s not in plan. I’m involved in the label Statement! We did the first Statement night! In Venlo not so long ago. The venue was amazing! It was really amazing! Maybe we can do a Statement Night in Paris soon ?! I’d love to play in France
