A l’occasion de ce deuxième jour d’Electrobeach, ce sont cette fois-ci les deux néerlandais Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano qui nous ont accueillis après leur set pour échanger quelques minutes. Le duo expérimenté, ambassadeur de la marque ‘Sexy By Nature’, évoque notamment la création de son propre label à venir dans quelques semaines, et leur relation particulière avec David Guetta et leurs débats sur le fromage.

Salut Sunnery, salut Ryan, ça fait un moment qu’on ne vous a pas vu en France !
Sunnery James : Je pense que notre dernière soirée était à Paris dans un club qui s’appelle Queen… oui le Queen Club !
Du coup vous pensez quoi du public français ? Comment était votre set à l’Ectrobeach ?
Sunnery James : Incroyable ! L’énergie était folle. On est arrivé en retard. On est arrivé au festival juste 20 minutes avant le set car on a eu un problème avec le chauffeur qui était bloqué dans le trafic. Notre agent a réglé ça avec son Google Maps et on a fini par arriver ! De la première à la dernière minute c’était fou, plein d’énergie et chaque track a fonctionné donc c’était cool pour nous.
Vous avez un gros programme d’été, quels sont vos prochains shows ?
Sunnery James : La semaine prochaine on est à Tomorrowland Belgique sur la Mainstage.
Ryan Marciano : Dans deux jours on a notre ‘Sexy By Nature At The Beach’ en Hollande. Ça va être fou. Et ensuite ça sera Tomorrowland.
Sunnery James : Tomorrowland va pas être si fou… (rires) Mais avant ça nous avons deux shows avec Hardwell à l’Ushuaia à Ibiza.
Ryan Marciano : Donc on ‘Sexy By Nature’ ce dimanche, lundi ça sera Ushuaia et ensuite on fait Tomorrowland.
Vous venez de parler de votre show ‘Sexy By Nature’. C’est un grand succès à travers le monde, pouvez-vous nous en dire plus sur le concept derrière le show ? Pourquoi ‘Sexy By Nature’ ?
Sunnery James : En fait, il y a deux ans, on trouvait que la scène avait besoin de plus que simplement le mainstream que l’on connait. Les 5 dernières années était dédiées à l’EDM mainstream. On n’a aucun problème avec ça mais on avait besoin de quelquechose à écouter au public pour les chauffer sur la musique House. Donc on a ramené Mark Knight, des mecs Tech House, Carl Cox… Donc c’est un cocnept entre le mainstream et la House underground un peu. Et on avait besoin d’un nom en fait. On ne savait pas comment l’appeler. On avait besoin d’un radio show mais comment allions nous l’appeler. Donc on a utilisé Twitter et Facebook pour voir comment nos fans décrivaient notre son et ce qui est sorti c’était, « sexy beats ». On ne savait pas trop pourquoi on avait eu ce nom donc on a pensé que c’était tout simplement venu naturellement. D’où le nom ‘Sexy By Nature’.
Ryan Marciano : Et c’est la version courte !
Vous avez maintenant l’habitude de jouer dans des gros festivals comme Tomorrowland, ou l’Electrobeach aujourd’hui, comment vous vous préparer pour de tels shows ?
Sunnery James : En fait, le fait est que l’on ne prépare pas vraiment notre set avec des notes ou quoi que ce soit d’autre. Vous savez quelles tracks vous voulez jouer et en suite tout dépend de la foule et comment elle réagit. Les premières cinq, dix minutes, on essaie de voir comment la foule est et on démarre petit à petit. Parfois vous avez besoin de travailler un peu plus mais aujourd’hui on a pu tout improviser.
Ryan Marciano : Et on a été plutôt surpris. On pensait que vous étiez un peu coincés mais en fait vous savez vraiment faire la fête !
Sunnery James : Vraiment, vraiment !
Vos sets incluent beaucoup de tracks groovy, tribales et tech house. Que pensez-vous de ce son typique House qui revient sur le devant de la scène ?
Sunnery James :C’est incroyable parce qu’on a commencé comme ça, en tombant amoureux de la musique House. Pour être honnête, c’était en fait notre premier gros show de l’été où on a essayé de jouer groovy sur une grosse mainstage, et ça marché du tonnerre. Le système son était aussi bon je pense. Les gens sont prêt pour des choses plus dansantes et pas juste des ‘1, 2, 3 Jump’ toutes les deux secondes. Peut-être juste toutes les quinze minutes (rires).
Corrigez nous si on se trompe mais on n’a pas vu de sortie majeure de votre part durant les derniers mois. Les dernières étaient ‘ABC’ chez Doorn et ‘Horny Bounce’ chez Armada Trice, et aucune sortie depuis.
Sunnery James :On travaille sur notre propre label. On a beaucoup de tracks terminées, deux collaborations aussi. En fait, on a genre 8 tracks terminées et toutes les tracks sortiront sur notre propre label. Ça démarre dans 6 semaines maintenant.
Donc c’est un tout nouveau label, vous pouvez peut-être nous dire le nom ?
Sunnery James : Sexy By Nature !
On vous a vu discuter avec David Guetta juste après votre set. C’est un bon ami ?
Sunnery James : On le connait depuis presque 10 ans. Il a été le premier à supporter les DJs néerlandais. Il a commencé avec Chuckie, ensuite Afrojack, nous aussi. C’est vraiment un bon mec qui a ouvert la voie a beaucoup de monde. Beaucoup de gens parlent en mal de lui, notamment sur le fait qu’il soit trop commercial. Dans tout le monde de la dance, il a fait beaucoup pour tout le monde. Tout le monde se faite de l’argent dans l’industrie dance music actuellement, et il a joué un grand rôle là-dedans.
Peut-être une future collaboration ?
Sunnery James : Peut-être ! Vous savez jamais ce qui peut arriver ! On a de bons contacts avec lui donc on sait jamais !
Ryan Marciano : Il nous dit que le fromage français est meilleur que le fromage néerlandais mais ce n’est pas vrai. (rires) On débat beaucoup sur le fromage !
On a presque fini, un dernier mot pour vos fans français ?
Sunnery James : Je pense qu’on a besoin de venir plus souvent. Merci pour votre amour, merci de nous accueillir, merci, merci beaucoup !

Sunnery James : I think our last party was in Paris in a club called Queen… Yes Queen Club !
So what do you think of the french public ? How was your set at Electrobeach ?
Sunnery James : Unebelievable ! The energy was insane. We came on with delay. We made to the show just 20 minutes before because we had a problem with the driver who was stuck in the traffic. Our agent fixed it with his Google Maps, and we made it to the show ! From the first to the last minute it was crazy, full energy and every track worked so it was good for us.
You have a big summer schedule, what are your next gigs ?
Sunnery James : Next week we do the Tomorrowland Belgium on the Mainstage.
Ryan Marciano : In two days we do ‘Sexy By Nature At the Beach’ in Holland. It’s gonna be amazing. And then it will be Tomorrowland.
Sunnery James : Tomorrowland is not gonna be that amazing… (laughs) But before that we also have two shows with Hardwell at Ushuaia in Ibiza.
Ryan Marciano : So we have ‘Sexy By Nature’ on Sunday, Tuesday will be Ushuaia and then we do the Tomorrowland.
You mentionned your show ‘Sexy By Nature’. It’s a big success around the world, could you tell us more about the concept behind the show ? Why ‘Sexy By Nature’ ?
Sunnery James : Actually, two years ago, we found that the whole scene needed something more than only the mainstream you know. The last five years were all about mainstream EDM. Nothing wrong with that but we needed something to get the kids warm up with house music, something to listen to. So we had Mark Knight, Tech House guys, Carl Cox… So it’s something in between the mainstream and the House underground a little bit. And we needed a name actually. We didn’t know how to call it We needed a radio show but how do we call it. So we went on Twitter and Facebook to see how our fans describe our sound and it was « sexy beats ». And we didn’t know why we got this name so we thought that it was naturally that they called it sexy. So we called it ‘Sexy By Nature’.
Ryan Marciano : And that’s the short version !
Now you are used to perform in big festival like Tomorrowland or Electrobeach today, so how do you prepare such shows ?
Sunnery James : Actually, the thing is that we don’t really prepare our set with something like, you know, minutes. You know what tracks you wann play and then it’s all about the crowd and how they react. The first five, ten minutes, we try to see how the crowd is and we start, we can go all the way, up and down. Sometimes you need to build it a little bit more but today you could play everything improvising.
Ryan Marciano : And we were actually surprised . We thought you guys were a little stuck up but you know actually how to party !
Sunnery James : Really, really !
It’s about my next question. Your sets include a lot of groovy, tribal, tech house tracks. What you think of this typical house sound coming back in front of the scene ?
Sunnery James : It’s amazing because we started like this, we fell in love with House music. To be honest it was actually the first big show of the summer that you try play groovy on a big mainstage, and it worked like crazy. The sound system was good as well I think. People are ready for some more dance and not every two seconds « 1, 2, 3, Jump » I think. Maybe more fifteen minutes (laughs)
Correct me if I’m wrong but we didn’t see any major release from you during the last months. The last one were ‘ABC’ on Doorn and ‘Horny Bounce’ on Armada Trice, and no release from.
Sunnery James : We’re working on our own label. We have a lot of tracks finished, two collaborations as well. Actually we’ve like 8 tracks finished and all tracks will be released on our own label. It starts in 6 weeks from now.
So it’s a brand new label, maybe you can tell us the name ?
Sunnery James : Sexy By Nature !
We saw you talking with David Guetta right after your set. It’s a big friend of yours ?
Sunnery James : We know him for almost ten years. He was the first guy who start supporting dutch DJs. He started with Chuckie, then Afrojack, he supported us. He’s a really good guy who opened up for all of us. A lot of people are getting shit to this guy like he’s too commercial. In the whole world of dancing, he did a lot of everybody. The reason why everybody makes money in the dance music right now, he has a big part in that.
Maybe you’ll be working with him in the future ?
Sunnery James : Maybe ! You never know what happens ! We have good contact with him so you never know what happens !
Ryan Marciano : He tells us that the french cheese is betther than the dutch but it’s not true. (laughs) We argue a lot about cheese !
We’re almost done, do you have one last word for your french fans ?
Sunnery James : I think we need to come more often. Thanks for your love, thanks for having us, merci, merci beaucoup !
