A l’occasion du dernier A State Of Trance, nous avons eu le plaisir de rencontrer un jeune artiste néerlandais qui gravit les échelons petit à petit : Rodg. Si son nom ne vous dit rien, nous vous conseillons de le retenir très vite. Ce grand gaillard distille avec talent une progressive house personnelle et entraînante et prend très serieusement son rôle en tant que warm-up DJ. Très actif ces dernières années côté productions, ce talent made in Armada se livre sur son expérience de producteur et de DJ, ses relations avec Armin Van Buuren ainsi que ses projets dans ce petit Q&A en toute franchise !

Salut Rodg et merci de nous accorder cet interview pour les lecteurs de Guettapen. L’année dernière, tu jouais déjà à ASOT sur la « Talent Room », cette année tu joues sur une scène plus grande, te sens tu plus stressé ou plus expérimenté ?
Hmmm, j’ai toujours une appréhension évidemment. L’année dernière c’était ma première fois à ASOT et je m’étais fixé comme objectif de jouer uniquement mes propres morceaux, un vrai « producer set ». Ça a plûtot fonctionné alors je me suis dis : « Qu’est-ce que je vais pouvoir faire cette année de différent ? » C’était trop simple et pas vraiment excitant de rejouer les mêmes morceaux alors je me suis dis qu’il fallait que je joue des nouvelles choses, des choses que je n’ai jamais joué ou que j’ai sorti en fin d’année dernière.
Lorsque tu as beaucoup de morceaux à venir et que tu veux les tester, c’est un challenge ! Cela m’a rendu nerveux toute la semaine précédent ASOT. Maintenant je dirais que je me sens plus confiant car je sais quel morceau marche et à quel moment, mais quant il s’agit de jouer des morceaux inconnus alors ma confiance s’envole aussitôt.
Est-ce que tu te considères plus comme un DJ ou comme un producteur ?
Je me considère avant tout comme un producteur qui joue sa musique. Produire c’est comme ça que j’ai commencé et c’est quelque chose que je ferai toujours.
Te souviens-tu de tes débuts ? 2012, un morceau en particulier ?
Le morceau « Jacqueline » ? Bien sur que je m’en souviens ! Le morceau avait été joué dans le BBC Essential Mix d’Armin Van Buuren. C’est marant car vous savez, je suis employé chez Armada et j’ai toujours été inspiré par les sets warm up d’Armin. Pour ces warm ups, je lui envoyais toujours des dossiers via Dropbox avec des morceaux que j’aimais bien en lui disant « Hey Armin, tiens je pense que tu aimeras bien ces morceaux », et à un certain moment je me suis dis, « Laissons lui un morceau que j’ai fais, on s’en fout, on verra bien! »! Puis il l’a joué pour la première fois à Mexico, à Den Bosch pour ASOT il y a 3 ans puis dans l’Essential Mix, c’était fou ! Juste après je recevais un message de Ruben de Ronde me disant : « Tu ferais bien d’écouter l’Essential Mix, tu vas devenir fou ! ».
Tu travailles donc à Armada (en tant qu’A&R) mais tu ne sais pas ce qu’Armin va jouer ?
Non Armin est totalement libre dans ce qu’il joue, donc évidemment je n’ai aucune influence sur ça. Vous savez, je lui envois ma musique et il l’a prend s’il l’aime bien. Evidemment je travaille à Armada et je connais Armin un petit peu désormais mais si ma musique n’est pas bonne, évidemment qu’il ne la jouera pas ! Peut être qu’il pense que je suis un bon gars, je sais pas ! Je pense qu’il pense que je suis un bon gars ahah !
Oui on peut le dire, il avait dit lors de l’ASOT Mexico qu’il croyait beaucoup en toi !
Je me souviens de son interview à l’ASOT de Mexico, je me suis senti honoré qu’il ait dit ça. Il m’inspire beaucoup, ça m’encourage pour continuer à produire et me ça donne beaucoup d’énergie positive.
Tu as une relation particulière avec Ruben de Ronde également et son label Statement ! qui est un sous label d’Armada, comment as tu commencé ton travail avec lui ?
Oui Ruben est un ami ! C’est comme ça que tout a commencé. On ne se connaissait pas avant de travailler à Armada mais on s’est tout de suite bien entendu. J’avais fais un morceau « Body Connection » pour un label d’un ami, et j’avais signé Jacqueline aussi chez eux puis Ruben m’a contacté pour me dire, tu sais ça correspond bien avec Statement! donc la fois d’après j’ai envoyé un morceau, « Is Anybody Out There » qui est sorti sur son label et ça a été joué par Above & Beyond. J’étais scotché ! C’était fou ! Je suis aussi content que ma musique trouve sa place dans A State Of Trance. C’est avec les sets warm ups d’Armin que j’ai commencé, je suis heureux lorsqu’il joue un de mes morceaux dans son émission hebdomadaire !
Tu es arrivé à un point où tes morceaux sont joués par les artistes les plus influents, on te retrouve sur quelques dates de la tournée A State Of Trance, à Ibiza et à d’autres soirées autour du globe, quelle est la prochaine étape ?
Ma prochaine grosse actualité sera la sortie de mon premier album cette année ! J’espère même avant l’été. Au début je voulais faire une sorte de compilation puis je me suis dis, vu que je joue beaucoup de mes propres compos pourquoi ne pas faire un album ?! Durant l’ADE, j’étais avec Ruben en interview et il disait « Ah ouai, Rodg, il va sortir un album l’année prochaine ». C’était marrant, je n’étais pas au courant encore mais à ce moment j’ai su ! Je me suis dis « C’est bon, on va le faire ! »
On a une question un peu touchy ! N’as-tu pas peur, avec ton style, de rester cantonné au statut de warm up Dj pour A State Of Trance?
Non pas du tout, je crois que le warm up est une très bonne place pour moi. J’aime ce créneau car tu peux jouer avec la tension du temps et du lieu. Les gens rentrent, se demandent : « Qu’est-ce qui se passe ici ?! ». Ce que j’essaie c’est de les emmener pour un voyage. C’est ce que j’aime le plus. J’essaie, de construire, au moins, une histoire, je sais ça peut sonner un peu vague mais c’est vraiment le cas. On a la possibilité de faire monter l’énergie, step by step, pas directement en jouant les trucs les plus bigs !
Je pense que les Djs wam up sont très sous-estimés et les gens n’évaluent pas encore assez bien l’importance d’un bon warm up.

Hi Rodg and thank you for answering us some questions for Guettapen. Last year you were already playing on the “Talent Room” of ASOT, this year you play on a bigger stage, do you feel more stressed or more experimented this year ?
Hmmm, Of course I feel stressed. Last year it was my first time being booked on ASOT and I set myself a goal and that was playing only my own records, only records I produced myself, a real “producer set”. That worked out so I asked myself “what am I going to do this year ?” It’s very easy if I pick already records I played last year, but it’s not really exciting. So, I actually only played records I played after that for the first time. So, basically, only new records I never played before and records I released later on last year. Especially if you have so much new music coming out if you want to test them, it’s a challenge and it got me really nervous last week.
Now I feel more confident because I know what kind of records works on what kind of moments, but If those records are unknown then my confidence is walking down the doors, just straight away. Both happened actually this night.
Do you consider yourself more as a DJ or a Producer ?
I consider myself more as a producer who is playing out. Because, producing music is what I will always do.
Do you remember your beginning ? In 2012 there were a particular track no ?
Was it “Jacqueline” ? Of course I remember, it was in Armin’s Essential Mix. That’s funny. You know, I work in Armada office and I was always very much into Armin’s warm up sets and it inspired me a lot, so I always send Armin a dropbox folder with the records I like with “Hey Armin, maybe you’d like these records”, whatever, so at the certain point I was let’s drop one from myself there, fuck it man, let’s do it. … He played it for the first time in Mexico, he played it in Den Bosch in A State of Trance 3 years ago at least and in his Essential Mix after that which was like crazy. Right after that Ruben texted me like “Listen to the Essential Mix, you’ll go crazy.”
You work in the Armada office, but you still don’t know what will he play, right.
No, yeah, Armin is totally free with what he is playing, of course, so I don’t have any influence on it. I send him my records and he takes it from there, you know. And of course, I work in Armada and I know Armin a little bit and I can send him my music, but still, if my music is s*hit, of course he will not play it haha. Maybe he thinks I’m a nice guy, I don’t know. I think he thinks I’m a nice guy.
Actually he does. He said that on the ASOT party in Mexico. He said he believes a lot in you.
I remember this from my interview in Mexico. I feel blessed with him saying that, he inspires me a lot by saying it, it motivates me to produce and it gives me a lot of good energy.
You also have a special relation with Ruben de Ronde and his label ‘Statement!’, how did you start to work with Ruben ?
Yeah, Ruben is a friend of mine. That’s the first thing. We didn’t knew each other before I started working in Armada, but we can get a long really well so we became friends.
I released some records on a label of friend of mine. It’s called ‘Body Condition’ , I released ‘Jacqueline’ there so Ruben said “This could be a Statement! like release, so next time I send it on Statement!, it’s called ‘Is Anybody Out There’. It has been released on Statement!, got played by Above & Beyond and I was like UFFF! Crazy. I’m also happy that my music is finding it’s place in A State of Trance. Armin’s warm up sets is what I’ve started with, so I’m happy that it has a place in his regular radio show.
So, you are at the point when you’re constantly supported by Armin, your music is being released on ‘Statement’, playing big events like A State of Trance, playing on Ibiza also, what is the next step ?
My next big step is releasing an album this year, I hope still before summer. You know, I wanted to do some kind of Mix Compilation kind of thing, but in the end I was like OK, I always play my own stuff, so why not making an album? It’s funny actually, during the Amsterdam Dance Event, I was together with Ruben in the interview and he said “Oh Yeah, Rodg, he will do an album next year.” I didn’t know it then, but now I know haha. I was like, “That’s it, let’s do it.”
Have a touchy question now ! Are you afraid, with your style, to always be considered as a warm up guy of A State Of Trance
No I’m not afraid because I think the warm up is a very good place for me to be. I like the slot, you can play a little bit more with a tension. People are walking in, asking themselves “ what’s happening here”, What I wanna do is to take them on a ride. That’s what I like so much with doing warm up sets.
At least I try to make a story, it sounds very vague, but I really do. Build up the energy, step by step, not directly with the hard stuff.
I think that warm up Djs are very underestimated and people are not evaluating the importance of a proper warm up.
